Warning Signs of an Engine Problem

If your check engine light flashes on, you shouldn’t ignore it. An illuminated check engine light doesn’t necessarily mean that your engine is on the verge of disaster, but it’s still smart to visit the shop for computerized diagnostics. This way, any emerging issues can be resolved before they worsen. Common check engine light triggers include problems with catalytic converters, ignitions coils, MAF sensors, and O2 sensors.

Loss of engine power could mean you have a significant problem. If you drive an older vehicle that has high mileage, then you don’t automatically need to worry if a little bit of power has been gradually lost over the years. But if your engine suddenly loses a lot of power, then you could be dealing with something serious, such as piston or head gasket trouble.

If there are strange sounds coming from your engine, then you’ll want to promptly determine what the underlying problem is. Knocking/tapping noises are definitely concerning, and could be due to worn-out rod bearings, lean air/fuel mixture, or insufficient lubrication. Squealing noises are commonly due to serpentine belt issues. Grinding noises that come from the engine can emerge because of a bad water pump or an issue with your power steering.

Discolored/excessive exhaust smoke can also serve as evidence of engine trouble. Black smoke is a sign that too much fuel is being burned. Blue-tinged smoke suggests an oil leak. White smoke is a symptom of an internal coolant leak and could mean you have a blown head gasket.
